Within the tranquil setting at Great Wood there are 4 fully equipped self catering lodges, the lodges overlook a lake and are surrounded by 20 acres of deciduous woodland.

The luxurious timber framed lodges have a galleried roof and wooden oak floors throughout. They have been built on eco friendly principles incorporating flax and recycled newspaper for insulation, plant oil based paints, water conservation and energy saving lighting. Douglas fir cladding has been used on the outside which has been protected with eco friendly paints so that, the lodges  blend into with the woodland environment. Harbour Apartment enjoys a central position in Whitby, overlooking the buzzy harbour. Whitby offers something more than your typical coastal seaside resort. It is famous for its connections to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Captain Cook and boasts a Gothic culture. Its charming, quirky, narrow cobbled streets are brimming with independent shops and numerous eateries and pubs. The majestic ruins of Whitby Abbey overlook the town, just moments from the apartment. You should definitely expect to encounter a hill or two in Whitby, not to mention the 199 steps to the abbey and St Mary’s Church. Just along from the main town and harbour you will discover the lovely sandy beaches of Sandsend and Runswick Bay. Sandsend was originally two villages, Sandsend and East Row. There are several delightful cafes for cups of tea and lunches.

The picturesque old fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay is just six miles south of Whitby . It is very attractive and definitely Instagram worthy with a sandy beach, rock pools, ancient fossils, narrow twisting cobbled streets and alleyways. You can easily imagine the fishermen and smugglers walking the streets hundreds of years ago. It is quite easy to get lost in the little warren of lanes lined with old fisherman’s cottages. Most have now been renovated. The village enjoys a good range of cafes, pubs and restaurants as well as charming, unique shops.

Staithes is also a picture postcard unmissable village, clinging to the hillside and boasting winding cobbled streets, 18th century cottages and characterful pubs. This fabulous coastal village was once one the largest fishing ports in the North East but now it is a wonderful hillside gem perfect for exploring Yorkshire’s cliff top paths and the rock pools on the small sandy beach.

There are many stunning coastal and country walks, cycle paths and 800km of bridleways close to Whitby. You will be amazed at the peaceful and tranquil countryside of the North York Moors National Park.

Or if you wish to stay on land head to the Captain Cook Memorial Museum housed in the harbour, where you can learn all about the famous Captain’s ships from Endeavour to Discovery, all built in Whitby. The Whitby Museum also covers the town’s whaling and shipping history, where little ones will be fascinated by the giant marine fossils on display.  

Keen walkers are spoilt for choice with a range of bike and cycle trails to get out and explore the beautiful local area. Take a stroll on the clifftops along the Cleveland Way National Trust that run from Robin Hood’s Bay to Staithes. Or take a train to Grosmont and walk the final section of the Esk Valley Walk back to Whitby following the “leaping salmon” trail signs.

Not to be missed are the spectacular coastal views to be found on the Cinder Track bike trail. Running along the old railway line you will experience four miles of stunning seaside scenery including the 13 arches of the Larpool Viaduct.  Bikes can be hired at Trailways at Hawkser.

Founded in 7th Century AD, the famous Whitby Abbey is well worth a visit, known as the place, where Easter’s dates were agreed between Roman and Celtic churches. The ruins and museum display over 3000 years of history and dramatic displays. Fans of the gothic will be thrilled and chilled by the Dracula Experience and Dracula rooms, celebrating the town’s influence on Bram Stoker’s most famous character. The town is host to a twice-yearly Goth Weekend, celebrating the wonderful underworld of Goth subculture.
