With abandoned pump houses, mine shafts, and workers' cottages, the village retains remnants of its illustrious history as the source of the finest tin. Both the Blue Hills Museum and the Perranzabuloe Folk Museum are excellent places to learn about the intriguing history of this coastal area.

Located in Perranporth, this lodge is on the beach. Just a few minutes’ walk from the beautiful beach and village of Mawgan Porth, you can truly enjoy the best of both worlds, with a fabulous rural-feel and harmony with the natural world and offering incredible countryside views, yet with all the amenities within easy reach. And for more surfing, shops and quaint cafes, the famous beach-paradise of Newquay is a 15-minute drive away.

Huge skies, glistening beaches and wild flower-strewn clifftops are rightfully the lasting images of Cornwall, and its warm climate, amazing scenery, and diverse Celtic heritage, including the arts and its enormous wealth of archaeology, certainly justifies the fierce pride of its people.

Famous for its water-sports, in particular surfing and sailing, Cornwall also offers an incredible rock-climbing scene, off-road cycling (including the 18 mile ‘Camel Trail’ following the scenic estuary of the river Camel) and of course, walking. The South West Coast Path, which runs for hundreds of miles along the West Country southern coastline, is particularly scenic around Penwith and the Lizard in the far south-west, venturing through vibrant towns, remote cliffs, beaches, farms and fishing villages. Another incredible walking path is the 125-mile Cornish Celtic Way, mapped by a local 55-year-old clergyman, which will show you a wilder, even more romantic side of this luscious county.

Be sure to try a Cornish pasty and delicious sweet Saffron buns, and of course a little Cornish Clotted cream and Ice Cream! And for a local tipple, the three major breweries of St Austell, Sharps and Skinners serve excellent beer in pubs throughout the county, and because of its mild climate Cornwall has a number of vineyards producing delicious wine, and is even known for its production of honey wine!

Though the magic of the county really happens in the rural Cornish landscape, there are many enchanting towns in Cornwall. Some famous ones include: Bude with its excellent beaches, first class surfing and laidback, relaxed vibe on the north coast; Newquay, the surfing capital of the UK, and; St Ives, the home of one branch of the Tate Gallery, with white sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters.

If you must visit a city (for a little retail therapy, or perhaps to see a show) the only one in the county is Truro, with High Tea at Charlotte's offering an unmissable experience, in a charming Victorian building serving Cornish-grown tea! There are two covered markets, one of which sells eco/organic products, and on Saturday mornings there’s a great farmers' market on the piazza where you can find local produce.

To get in, there are ever-improving roads and trains running right through to Penzance in the far south-west of the county, as well as Cornwall Airport Newquay (NQY) about 5 miles from Newquay, or a 30-40-minute drive from Truro. The nearby airports of Exeter (EXT) and Bristol (BRS) offer a wider range of flights than Newquay and will usually be significantly cheaper. Car hire is available at all three airports.

With its enviable coast Cornwall has a plethora of beaches to choose from where crystal-clear waves await your enjoyment with swimming, paddleboarding, water-skiing and boat rides all available.  As the surfing mecca of the UK, Newquay is home to Britain’s premiere surfing spot, Fistral Beach.  World renowned it plays host to the Boardmasters International Surf Competition each year, whilst out of the water Fistral and nearby Watergate Bay are the place to be for the annual five-day music festival, Boardmasters.

A gateway to the wild beauty of Cornwall, there are plenty of local beaches and beauty spots.  Crantoch Beach is a must see with its epic sand dunes, perfect for exploring, if you venture onto the footpaths to Polly Joke Beach you might even spot some local seals sunning themselves on the secluded shore.  Watergate Bay offers two miles of golden sand and a more peaceful environment whilst a short drive will take you to the perfect rock-pooling spot at Porth Beach.  Make sure you head out on the narrow footbridge to Porth Island for stunning views of the Cornish coastline. Or take a visit to nearby National-Trust owned Trerice, a charming Elizabethan manor with picture perfect gardens, perched just outside of Newquay

On the South coast a trip to The Eden Project in St. Austell is only a forty-minute drive, a perfect spot for families where you can walk amongst the dramatic tropical biomes and experience the sights and smells of the rainforest.    There are fascinating displays on climate and sustainability and a large restaurant and gift shop to keep the kids fed and happy!

Why not take a day trip to St. Ives for a little local culture and visit the Cornish home of the Tate Gallery to check out exhibits of both famous and local artists and browse the local artisan shops.

The oak doors to the rest of the house are fabulous with eye-catching coloured glass panels. Just a few steps down, you will find the very attractive lounge area with its perfectly fitting corner sofa, its hanging fire and extraordinary views across to the village and bay. The full floor-to-ceiling glass doors and apex windows bring the outside in and make this a fabulous, countryside haven. No matter what the weather you will no doubt enjoy this delightful space. Surfers will want to head to the rolling waves of Constantine Bay, Harlyn or further north to the famous surf beach of Polzeath. Harlyn Bay is home to a famous surf school so is a very good bet if you fancy some tuition.

The South West Coast Path boasts incredible scenery with landscape and seascapes synonymous with shipwrecks and smugglers. Past Mother Ivey’s Bay, the prominent Trevose Head boasts stunning views up and down the coast.

For a day away from the beach, you can visit the magnificent late Victorian country house of Lanhydrock and its fabulous gardens and wooded estate. After a devastating fire in 1881, the Jacobean house was completely refurbished in Victorian style. You can discover two sides of Victorian life, upstairs and downstairs. The extensive gardens are beautiful. You can also enjoy off-road cycle trails, hiring cycles there or you can walk for miles.

The picturesque port of Padstow is within easy distance, nestled on the beautiful Camel Estuary. It boasts excellent shops, charming pubs, cafes and renowned gourmet restaurants including Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant. Padstow is the start of the wonderful Camel Trail over to Bodmin Moor. You can hire cycles in the town if you do not have your own. Overlooking Padstow, you will find the fine Elizabethan country house, Prideaux Place which boasts formal gardens and a deer park. It was built in 1592 and has been passed down through the generations to the current owners, Peter and Elisabeth Prideaux-Brune.

The Fowey estuary is a glorious sight with Fowey on one side at the mouth of the River Fowey and the gorgeous town of Polruan on the other. The ferry house was originally the du Maurier family home and later the home of Angela du Maurier, Daphne’s sister.

During the Second World War, Fowey was the centre for air-sea rescue and one of the places from which the D-Day invasions were launched. St Catherine’s Castle below was built during the reign of Henry VIII to defend the harbour entrance. It is accessible when walking from the pretty Readymoney Cove. On Fore Street you will find the Old House of Foye, a medieval house built in 1430. It is now a shop but the walls, beamed interior and fireplace are pretty much the same.
